I grew up in a place where abundant snowfall was more like a thing of myth and folklore than something real that actually happens. I would often imagine waking up to a winter wonderland, with snow-covered trees and a blanket of white as far as the eye could see. The rare occasions when snow did fall only served to intensify my desire to experience it more fully. |
I dreamed of building snowmen with carrot noses and coal eyes, snowshoeing through hip-deep snow, and learning to downhill ski on powdery slopes. The crisp, cold air, the crunch of snow underfoot, and the sight of my breath misting in the frosty air were all part of the magical allure of winter.
So, when I finally moved to the Northeast, I indulged in every imaginable snow-related activity. One particularly memorable experience was snowmobiling.
The drive from Rhode Island to Maine was long, especially as we pushed through the traffic in Boston. But the excitement of our upcoming adventure kept us going. We didn’t make any special stops along the way, eager to reach our destination. As it started to get darker, we couldn’t help but wonder if we might spot a moose along the way, but luck wasn’t on our side this time.
Northern Outdoors |
Upon arrival, my wife and I checked into Northern Outdoors in The Forks, Maine. The main lodge is a rustic, log-built structure that exudes a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
Inside, we found a large stone fireplace, comfortable seating areas, and a pub-style restaurant known as the Kennebec River Pub. The pub features wooden beams, a warm ambiance, and large windows that offer stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.
A quick pub burger, all the more delicious because of the long trip, then we found our cabin.
The cabins at Northern Outdoors are charming log structures, each with its own unique character. They are situated a short stroll away from the main lodge and are surrounded by tall pine trees, providing a sense of seclusion and tranquility. The cabins are well-equipped with modern amenities,

including comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and kitchenettes, making them a perfect retreat after a day of adventure.
Our cabin, “Widowmaker”, was the perfect size for the two of us. With a living space / bedroom, a bathroom, and small kitchen, it inspired daydreams of moving to the wilderness.
We slept soundly after the long trip, but woke up early, eager to start our experience.
The next morning, we geared up and headed to the training session. We naively imagined that our jeans and winter coats would suffice, but the outfitters knew better and made sure we were properly equipped with waterproof layers over warm layers, helmets, boots—everything we needed.
The training on operating the snowmobile was fairly short, focusing mainly on safety and basic handling.
Throttle and brakes were much like those on a motorcycle, though not many motorcycles have hand warmers. Kill switch button, check.
“My wife, sitting behind me, hooted and hollered with excitement as we sped down the trail, her laughter echoing through the forest. The thrill of the ride brought out pure joy and exhilaration, adding to the unforgettable experience.” |
Choke, check. And unlike a motorcycle, snowmobiles don’t tip over every time you stop.
Most of the time was spent learning how to handle situations like a “flat tire” or, more accurately, a broken tread. The instructors demonstrated how to replace a broken tread, emphasizing the importance of carrying a spare and the necessary tools. They also taught us how to identify signs of wear and tear to prevent breakdowns on the trail.
With our training complete, we were ready to hit the trails. It was the end of the season, so the snow cover was sparse and muddy in places. However, other riders zoomed along through the occasional mud puddles with such casualness that we felt encouraged to push through and explore further. The trails were well- maintained, winding through the forest and offering a mix of open stretches and tighter, more technical sections.
As first-timers, we stayed on the marked trails, enjoying the thrill of the ride and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. According to the map, there was a lake we could have crossed, but we decided to continue into the forest instead. The scenery was breathtaking, with snow-covered trees and the occasional glimpse of wildlife.
Riding a two-seat snowmobile, my wife sat on the back, enjoying the ride and taking in the sights. For her, the experience was exhilarating, and for me, the thrill of giving her that excitement was even better than the scenery. Yes, dear, you married a manly man who can handle a snowmobile!
Despite the sparse snow cover, the trails were still a joy to ride. The occasional muddy patches added an element of challenge, but we quickly learned to handle them with confidence. The camaraderie among the riders was evident, with everyone offering tips and encouragement along the way.
The Kennebec River Loop Trail is a scenic and exhilarating route that offers a perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty. As you set out on the trail, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Maine, with the Kennebec River often in view. The trail winds through dense forests, open meadows, and along the riverbanks, providing a diverse and captivating riding experience.
The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it accessible for riders of all skill levels. As you navigate the twists and turns, you’ll encounter a variety of terrain, from smooth, packed snow to more challenging sections with occasional muddy patches, especially towards the end of the season. The forested areas are particularly enchanting, with snow-covered trees creating a magical winter wonderland.
Throughout the ride, there are moments when the trail opens up, offering breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding wilderness. These open stretches are perfect for picking up speed and feeling the rush of the wind against your face. However, the temptation to push off the trail into the untouched snow is always present. The pristine, powdery snow looks inviting, but caution prevails as you remember the importance of staying on the marked path to avoid hidden obstacles and ensure a safe ride.
One of the most memorable moments on the Kennebec River Loop Trail was when we hit a long, clear straightaway. I couldn’t resist the urge to gun the engine and feel the full power of the snowmobile. My wife, sitting behind me, hooted and hollered with excitement as we sped down the trail, her laughter echoing through the forest. The thrill of the ride brought out pure joy and exhilaration, adding to the unforgettable experience.

After spending a second night in our cozy cabin, we woke up refreshed and ready for the next leg of our adventure. Before heading home, we made a stop at Berry’s General Store in West Forks. This beloved local establishment has been serving the community and adventurers since 1963. The store offers a wide range of essentials, from groceries and outdoor gear to hot meals and local brews. It was the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs and gas up before hitting the road. The friendly atmosphere and the sense of camaraderie among fellow adventurers made it a memorable stop on our journey.
And since it was maple tapping season, we stopped by Haulk’s Maple Saphouse in Madison to witness turning the sap into syrup and to take home a jug of that yummy sweetness.
