Are you a travel writer? Want to be? We want to hear your ideas.

We are the proud publishers of JauntingNortheast Traveler, and Rhode Island Roads magazines. Our publications are available both electronically and in print on demand, catering to a modest but growing audience. Despite our size, we strive to maintain a high level of professionalism in all our endeavors.

About Our Magazines:

  • Jaunting: Focuses on unique travel experiences and destinations worldwide.
  • Northeast Traveler: Dedicated to exploring the diverse and rich travel opportunities in the US Northeast.
  • Rhode Island Roads: Highlights the charm and attractions of Rhode Island.

Our readers are individuals who are planning or dreaming about achievable travel experiences. We publish both bylined and staff-written articles that inspire and inform, covering a range of topics from luxury hotels and spas in exotic destinations to mountain biking adventures and leisurely strolls on small-town main streets. We aim to provide content that is both aspirational and accessible, avoiding the extremes of billion-dollar yachts and climbing Mount Everest.

Submission Guidelines

We are a highly visual magazine where photos drive the articles. On average, we use one photo per 100 words. Please ensure your submissions align with this visual emphasis.

To submit your work, please email your articles to paul@pence.com. We prefer submissions in MS Word format, accompanied by a zip file of the photos. For bylined articles, don’t forget to include a short bio (50-100 words) and a high-resolution author photo.

We typically look for 2,000-word first-person features and 800-1,000-word shorter informative articles. However, these lengths are guidelines, not strict requirements—let the content drive the length. We also welcome ultra-focused pieces of 100 words that evoke a larger experience, such as how sipping coffee at a bistro evokes the broader experience of a trip to Paris.

We prefer narrative articles over bullet points and section headings. Articles should be as evergreen and timeless as possible. While news-based stories are acceptable, they are not our primary focus. Plan ahead for seasonal stories, such as winter stories for winter issues. We also print one how-to story per issue in Jaunting only.

We typically respond to submissions within a week.

Content Requirements

All content must be suitable for a general audience. We prefer original submissions, but if the content is not original, ensure you have all the proper rights to publish it.

For features, we prefer a first-person narrative style. Accuracy is crucial as our readers rely on our information to make travel plans. Confirm all essential details and provide “For More Information” links at the end of the article.

Ensure proper photo rights and credits are secured. Higher resolution photos are preferred, but cell phone pictures are acceptable in most cases.

Pitching Guidelines

For existing articles, pitch with the complete article and photos. For planned articles, provide a brief overview of your ideas. We typically respond to pitches within a week.

If you need letters of assignment for access or hosting, please plan for extra lead time. Inform our contacts that we follow a magazine publishing schedule, not a blog schedule. It may take a month or more for an approved article to be published.

We are incredibly open to subjects and topics for proposed articles. Accepted pitches have included a visit to Normandy’s Omaha Beach with a veteran’s tour, local resident recommendations for activities in Baja, mountain biking in California, and touring Jackson, Wyoming. Your pitch doesn’t need to be complicated. For example: “Hey, Paul, I’m headed to see a rocket launch in Texas next month, can you use a feature story about it?”

Payment and Rights

While we currently do not have the advertising revenue to pay for the hard work and creativity of our writers, we offer what we can, a free page of advertising for authors to promote their favorite business or charity, along with our sincere appreciation.

We accept reprints and do not demand exclusive rights. We are willing to work with newcomers, providing gentle editing and coaching where desired.
