Of course when we are talking about Meredith, we have to talk about magnificent Lake Winnipesaukee. If you’re headed east, Meredith is the point where the massive lake is first revealed — a sprawling body of water that beckons with crystal-clear waters and stunning vistas. The lake is a haven for boating enthusiasts, with countless opportunities to sail, kayak, or paddleboard across its serene surface.
Adjacent to the lake is Ellacoya State Park, a gem that offers a 600-foot sandy beach perfect for sunbathing and swimming. If you’re just passing through, the park is a great spot to stretch your legs, for kids to get some energy burned off, and a chance for families to enjoy a leisurely picnic amidst the natural beauty. Very visible from the park is one of the most popular experiences on Lake Winnipesaukee — the M/S Mount Washington. This 230-foot vessel offers a variety of cruises, from narrated scenic tours that delve into the lake’s rich history to elegant dinner cruises that provide a perfect setting for a romantic evening.
Wine enthusiasts will find a haven at Hermit Woods Winery & Deli. This charming winery offers tastings of their handcrafted wines made from local fruits, each sip revealing the unique flavors of the region. The on-site deli complements the wine perfectly, with delicious food pairings that enhance the tasting experience. The winery’s cozy atmosphere and friendly staff make it a delightful stop for a relaxing savor the flavors and unwind in a picturesque setting.
Ff want to move along, but prefer to stay on dry land, you can enjoy a touch of nostalgia aboard the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad, with a delightful journey along the shores of the lake. The train rides provide breathtaking views of the water and surrounding mountains, all while offering a glimpse into the area’s rich history. One of the standout events is the Lake Winnipesaukee Antique & Classic Boat Show, a must-see for boat enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Held annually in August at the Meredith Bay, this event showcases a stunning array of antique and classic boats from around the country. The boats, meticulously restored and maintained, offer a glimpse into the rich maritime history of the region. Visitors can stroll along the docks, admire the craftsmanship, and even chat with the boat owners to learn more about their prized vessels. Another popular event in August is the Meredith Rotary Club’s Annual Lobster Fest. The Lakes Region Fine Arts & Crafts Festival is another highlight of Meredith’s event calendar.

The Great Rotary Fishing Derby in February attracts anglers from all over, while the Pond Hockey Classic in January brings together hockey enthusiasts for a weekend of competitive fun on the ice. The Annual Christmas in the Village event in December is a festive celebration with holiday lights, caroling, and a visit from Santa. But if you don’t happen to be in town during these events, you can always engage in on of Meredith’s standout experiences — shopping. The heart of Meredith’s shopping scene is the Mill Falls Marketplace. This historic marketplace is housed in a converted factory building and features a collection of unique shops, eateries, and scenic walkways.
Along the brick pathways you’ll encounter beautiful flower gardens, a 40-foot waterfall, and more of the award-winning sculpture walk. The Marketplace is home to 11 fabulous shops, including Adornments & Creative Clothing, a boutique known for its unique clothing, jewelry, and accessories. The shop’s collection of Made in the USA items and finely crafted sterling silver and semi-precious stone jewelry make it a favorite among visitors.
For those with a sweet tooth, Lee’s Candy Kitchen offers a nostalgic experience with its wide selection of retro candies, gourmet chocolates, and fudge. The smell of freshly baked waffle cones from Ben & Jerry’s is hard to resist, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor.
The Marketplace also features several dining options, such as Giuseppe’s Pizzeria & Ristorante, where you can indulge in classic Italian cuisine in a cozy, authentic setting.
One of my favorites with the Mill Falls shops is Innisfree Bookshop, a local gem is a go-to place for books, games, and unique gifts. The bookstore’s welcoming atmosphere and carefully curated selection make it a must-visit for book lovers and those looking for special souvenirs. For a taste of local craftsmanship, Artisans by the Bay offers a variety of handmade items, including jewelry, pottery, and artwork. This gallery showcases the talents of local artists and provides a wonderful opportunity to take home a piece of Meredith’s creative spirit.
Other notable shopping spots include The Moccasin Shop, which offers a variety of moccasins and leather goods, and 603 Paws, a specialty shop for pet lovers. Annalee Dolls, a short jaunt out of downtown, is another unique store, known for its charming and collectible dolls that make perfect gifts or keepsakes. These shops, along with many others, make Meredith a paradise for shopaholics, offering a diverse and enjoyable shopping experience.
But man does not live by shopping alone. Meredith, also offers a delightful array of dining options, each providing a unique culinary experience.
Perhaps my favorite is George’s Diner, a modest but beloved local restaurant known for its home-style cooking and friendly atmosphere. Established in 1991, George’s Diner operates on the philosophy that fresh and simple ingredients make the best meals possible. Located at 10 Plymouth Street, this diner is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
The menu features a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, all prepared with care and served in generous portions. Whether it’s time for a hearty breakfast, a quick lunch, or a leisurely dinner, George’s Diner has something to satisfy my cravings. The diner is particularly famous for its comfort food, such as the house special breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, home fries, and toast. The pancakes are a standout, often described as fluffy and delicious, making them a must-try.
Lunch and dinner at George’s Diner are equally satisfying. The menu features a range of comfort foods, from hearty sandwiches and burgers to classic New England dishes like clam chowder and fish and chips. One of the diner’s signature dishes is the turkey dinner, which comes with all the trimmings and is a favorite among regulars. The portions are generous, ensuring that no one leaves hungry.
The service at George’s Diner is consistently praised for being friendly and efficient. The staff are known for their warm, bubbly personalities and their dedication to making every dining experience enjoyable. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular, you’re always greeted with a smile and treated to excellent service.

And speaking of turkey dinner, we have to talk about Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant. This restaurant is located on Daniel Webster Highway at the top of the hill just before entering downtown Meredith. Hart’s Turkey Farm has been serving delicious, home-style turkey dishes since 1954. You can tell from its name that this family-owned restaurant specializes in all things turkey, from roast turkey dinners to turkey pot pies and turkey sandwiches. The warm and inviting atmosphere, combined with the friendly service, makes it a great place for a family meal or a casual dinner with friends. The menu also includes a variety of other American classics, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
If you want a more upscale dining experience, Lago at Bay Point is an excellent choice. Situated inside The Inn at Bay Point, Lago offers an authentic Old World dining atmosphere with stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee. The restaurant’s menu features a mix of rustic Italian specialties, decadent pastas, fresh seafood, and prime meats. The signature dishes, such as the braised short ribs and the seafood risotto, are must-tries. The elegant decor and attentive service make Lago a perfect spot for a special occasion or a romantic dinner.
Other notable dining spots in Meredith include The Waterfall Cafe, a charming breakfast and lunch spot with a cozy atmosphere and delicious menu options, and The Lakehouse Grille, which offers a casual dining experience with a fo cus on fresh, local ingredients. The Frog Rock Tavern is another great choice, known for its creative cocktails and laid-back vibe. These dining options, along with many others, ensure that Meredith has something to offer every palate and dining preference.
Well, after a day of shopping and a great dinner, you might decide to spend the night in Meredith.
The town offers a variety of accommodations that cater to different tastes and preferences.
