Nantucket’s Veranda House Reborn

Nantucket’s Veranda House long stood as a testament to the island’s rich history and timeless charm. This April, after a devastating fire in 2022 reduced the beloved Federal-style mansion to ashes, the iconic property will once again open its doors to locals and travelers alike.

The meticulous rebuild, a labor of love and dedication, has breathed new life into the historic structure, seamlessly blending modern luxury with the island’s unique heritage.

As guests step through the doors of the newly restored Veranda House, they will be greeted by the familiar wraparound verandas, now enhanced with state-of-the-art amenities and design elements that pay homage to the original 1684 building. The reopening of Veranda House is not just the revival of a cherished landmark, but a celebration of Nantucket’s resilience and enduring spirit.

The fire completely destroyed the original structure, but the rebuild was carefully managed to preserve the original charm and character. The new property honors its historic roots by recreating its size, scale, and architectural elements, now enhanced with modern amenities, ADA-compliant features, and state-of-the-art systems.

Nathan Chapman, who purchased the property in 1881, originally had no intention of turning it into a hotel. However, during the first Coffin family reunion on the island, the influx of visitors seeking lodging inspired him to convert his home into a hotel.

The Veranda House officially opened its doors on August 15, 1882. Some sources suggest that the original Veranda House was built on the site of Nantucket town founder William Gayer’s 1648 house. While this claim is debated, it adds to the property’s rich historical significance.

The newly rebuilt Veranda House combines coastal-inspired comfort with sophisticated décor and exclusive luxury features.

This distinctive, historic Federal-style mansion offers a bright, airy dining room and gathering room in its common areas. Its 19 rooms create a serene coastal haven, featuring spa-like en-suite baths with Carrera marble, white tiles, subway-tiled showers, frameless glass doors, rainfall shower heads, and custom cabinetry and fixtures.

The entire property features a serene and cohesive design reflecting the island’s coastal charm, with calming, cool-toned hues inspired by the sea and shore, and soft wood tones that invoke an elevated nautical vibe. Additional design elements throughout the hotel pay homage to its rich history, from signage inspired by the original building to a historic photograph gallery wall in the lounge.

In addition to its elegant interior spaces, Veranda House also boasts extensive outdoor grounds, featuring a beautifully manicured lawn and designated seating areas for guests to lounge and mingle. The property’s garden, lovingly maintained by a full-time gardener, offers guests an intimate way to engage with Nantucket’s famed island culture. Reminiscent of an English country garden, it boasts flowers, grasses, and trees that transition beautifully throughout the summer, as well as custom-built flower boxes that elevate the island’s tradition of ornate window boxes.

The hotel has also adorned its outdoor spaces with furniture that reflects the elevated coastal charm of its interior, featuring elements of wicker and, of course, Adirondack chairs throughout the area.

Veranda House holds a special place in the hearts of Nantucket residents, symbolizing the island’s rich history and enduring charm.
