This fall, immerse yourself in the chilling world of Victorian London as Hartford Stage presents Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. Running from October 10 through November 3, 2024, this production promises to be a highlight of the spooky season.
Directed by the acclaimed Melia Bensussen, this adaptation delves into the psychological complexities of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella. The story pits the well-respected Dr. Henry Jekyll against his sinister alter-ego, Mr. Hyde, in a suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse. As Bensussen notes, “This production will change the way you think about good and evil—and the make-up of each of us as human beings.”
Jeffrey Hatcher’s version of Robet Lewis Stevenson’s classic tale is known for its innovative approach, where multiple actors portray the character of Mr. Hyde within the same performance. This technique emphasizes the fragmented and multifaceted nature of Hyde’s personality, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. It also includes a female actor among those portraying Hyde, bringing a fresh perspective to the character’s duality.
The production features a talented ensemble cast, including Nathan Darrow as Dr. Henry Jekyll, with Jennifer Bareilles, Sarah Chalfie, Nayib Felix, Omar Robinson, and Peter Stray rounding out the ensemble. The creative team includes Choreography by Shura Baryshnikov, Scenic Design by Sara Brown, Costume Design by An-Lin Dauber, Lighting Design by Evan C. Anderson, Sound Design and Original Composition by Jane Shaw, and Wig Design by Jodi Stone.
There will be an opportunity to enhance your theater experience with post-show conversations on October 20, 29, and 30.
An open-captioned performance will be held on October 27 at 2:00 p.m., and an audio-described performance on November 2 at 2:00 p.m. School groups can attend special student matinee performances on October 23, 24, and 31.
