A History of Arts: HUDSON HALL

Hudson Hall, a beacon of cultural enrichment and artistic expression, stands is New York State’s oldest surviving theater. Since its restoration began in 1997, Hudson Hall has become a vibrant hub for arts and culture, offering a year-round schedule of diverse programming.

Hudson Hall’s history is rich and varied. Originally serving as the city’s city hall and civic center in 1855, it housed offices, a post office, and even a police station. The upstairs performance space hosted everything from plays and concerts to boxing matches and agricultural shows.

Over the years, it has welcomed notable figures such as painter Frederic Church, women’s rights advocate Susan B. Anthony, and President Theodore Roosevelt. After a period of decline, the building was revitalized and reopened as Hudson Hall in 2017, with a mission to inspire and promote the arts while contributing to the cultural and economic advancement of the region.
