The Portland Museum of Art (PMA) is a beacon of Maine’s creativity and culture. This fall, the museum invites visitors to explore its latest exhibition, “As We Are,” running from October 11, 2024, to April 27, 2025. This showcase of emerging artists with deep connections to Maine offers a fresh perspective on contemporary art, all within the in-spiring setting of the PMA
The PMA is renowned for its commitment to celebrating both historical and contemporary art, making it a perfect venue for “As We Are.” The exhibition features a diverse array of mediums, including painting, photography, drawing, ceramics, and sculpture. Visitors can expect to see works that engage with themes of identity, ecology, kinship, and care, all while reflecting Maine’s rich artistic heritage.
Among the 14 artists featured, several stand out for their significant contributions. For instance, Tessa Greene O’Brien, a Maine native, brings her vibrant oil paintings that capture the essence of local scenes. Her piece, “Bayview Market & Takeout,” is a testament to her ability to blend everyday moments with artistic expression. Another notable artist is Dylan Hausthor, whose archival pigment prints delve into themes of resilience and culture, offering a unique perspective shaped by their island upbringing off the coast of Maine.
James Parker Foley’s large-scale oil paintings, such as “Divers Approaching Infinite Density,” create a lucid, expansive space that invites viewers into a utopian iteration of the Maine coast. This work is particularly striking for its use of blue tones and nighttime settings, which evoke a sense of tranquility and introspection.
The PMA’s dedication to accessibility and community engagement shines through in its programming for “As We Are.” The museum has planned a full schedule of events, including gallery talks and lectures, designed to deepen visitors’ connection to the art and the artists. This commitment to inclusivity is part of the PMA’s broader “Art for All” initiative, which aims to create experiences that strengthen community bonds and make art accessible.
Located in Congress Square, the PMA is more than just a museum; it’s a cultural hub that brings people together through the power of art. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, a trip to the PMA offers a chance to immerse yourself in Maine’s vibrant art scene and discover the innovative voices shaping its future.
